<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - My Grandmother’s Garden - Years ago when I graduated from college and came home for the summer, my Grandma Joan helped me start my first garden in my parent's yard. We planted mostly fruits and vegetables like strawberries, tomatoes, and zucchini. We had so much fun watching it grow together and couldn’t believe what fertile soil was just beneath the surface. You should have seen how big everything grew! Now, we can’t stop talking about all things gardening when we are around each other.</image:title>
<image:caption>Today I thought it would be fun to share with you how Joan, now 95 years old, got started gardening and why it’s been a life-long hobby for her.</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - My Grandmother’s Garden - The soil in La Crescenta was so different than here in Solana Beach. Because La Crescenta was in a floodway, there were tons of rocks. They called it “Rock-Crescenta.” Here the soil was sandy. Since I’ve come to Solana Beach especially, I’m a lot more interested in succulents. I like how easy it is to break off a piece and stick it into the soil.</image:title>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - My Grandmother’s Garden - I read a book about having a playhouse made of sunflowers. You plant the sunflowers in a circle and when they grow you tie them at the top in the middle so the kids can go in and sit under it. I did that and was so excited.</image:title>
<image:caption>My grand-daughter, Gabbie, came over one day with 4-5 little girls and I suggested they go inside. They got in there and all of a sudden I heard screaming! They lasted about 2 minutes because there was a spider in there. They never went in there again!</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - My Grandmother’s Garden - Big thank you to Joan for agreeing to be interviewed for the blog today! I will end by saying that any time someone asks me who my garden inspiration is, I always say my Grandma Joan. There’s something about gardening that makes it so special to pass down from generation to generation and I’m so grateful to have a grandma who taught me about the magic that gardening can bring to life.</image:title>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - How to Host a Kids Flower Giveaway - Here are a few of my tips and tricks to make it a fun-filled day: Bring more rubber bands and ribbon than you think you’ll need. We ran out of ribbon pretty quickly. When someone arrives with a bouquet of flowers, remove the wrapping and rubber bands from the bouquet and set them in the middle of the table. This way when the time comes, everyone can mix and match from each other's flowers and make unique bouquets.</image:title>
<image:caption>Once everyone arrives, get them together to talk about what you’re doing and show them a few demonstration bouquets so they can see what the bouquets should look like. How many stems should go in each bouquet? What length should the stems be? How should they tie them? We went with 5-7 stems per bouquet.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/610430dde908b67aca815c2e/e52e56c5-9649-4375-a0e6-8682c673951f/IMG_6993.jpeg</image:loc>
<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - How to Host a Kids Flower Giveaway - If the kids are young, help them cut the flowers or cut them yourself. Have a bucket or two filled with water where the kids can put their bouquets when they finish making one so that the flowers don’t wilt from being out of water for too long. Once everyone has finished making bouquets, have them take one or two and go together to find people to give them to. At our giveaway, we delivered flowers to people sitting on benches, playing basketball, and hanging out at a nearby playground. I like asking people if they’d like flowers for themselves or to give to someone they love. BONUS: Bring extra small arrangements or bouquets and set them aside. Give those away to each of the kids as a party favor. This was the hit of the party when we did it!</image:title>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - Interview with Jen from Nectar & Bloom - I love Tarot and oracle decks, and I suddenly felt wildly inspired to create one of my own that shared the metaphoric wisdom of flowers. I wanted to provide others with guidance and insights from the wealth of healing energy that flowers possess, so I started by slowly building a manuscript of all of the flowers I wanted to include. I drafted my writeups about each flower by combining my knowledge from working with them first hand with my research about their origins, growth habits, and folkloric meanings. I also worked to weave in the incredible perspectives I've gathered in my studies of yoga, Reiki, Ayurveda, and other healing modalities.</image:title>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - How Have Flowers Helped You? Our Community Answers - I recently asked The Flower Remedy community members about the power that flowers have had on their lives.</image:title>
<image:caption>Here are some of their answers: Whitney Finley from Two Blooms Farm said “my mom had a love for flowers, and now that she has passed, flowers are a way for me to stay connected to her while connecting with my daughters.” Whitney’s 3 year old answered the question as well by saying “flowers mean I love you!” Too cute!</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - How Have Flowers Helped You? Our Community Answers - Meanwhile, Anni talked about how growing flowers are nutrition for the soul.</image:title>
<image:caption>“Some people think I should be growing fruits and vegetables for my family to eat. The native wildflowers I’m growing are nutrition for their hearts and souls. The fact that many (most?) of them are also edible and/or medicinal is just a bonus! Not too many people burst into big smiles when you hand them a zucchini. But try not to smile even a little bit if someone hands you a big bunch of flowers!” - Anni Welborne, Mariposa Meadow</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - How to Press Flowers from Your Garden - How to Press Flowers with a Book or Wooden Flower Press</image:title>
<image:caption>Pick flowers mid-day when they are the most dry. Unlike when harvesting flowers for bouquets (which is generally best in the morning), you want the flowers to have the least amount of water in them when you press them, so mid-day is usually a good bet. Press the flowers within an hour of picking them. You may want to put them in water so they don’t die. Just make sure to remove the part of the stem that was in the water before pressing it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - My Top Flower Garden Tips - Flower Harvesting Tips for the Longest Vase Life:</image:title>
<image:caption>Look up specific harvesting recommendations for each flower you grow and try to cut them at that time. For example, if you cut cosmos when they are fully open, you’ll only get a day or two out of them, but if you cut them when the buds are colored but haven’t opened up yet, they will last a few days longer. Floret’s Library is a great resource for this. Cut flowers early in the morning. Take off all greenery that falls below the water line. Put flowers directly in water (and flower food if you have it). I bring vases/buckets out into the garden with me so I can put each stem directly in the water after I strip them of their leaves. Use clean clippers and cut at an angle. Keep in a cool space away from fruit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - The Flower Remedy Newsletter - Issue 3, June 2023 - Meanings include: love (red roses), new beginnings (white roses), friendship (yellow roses), enchantment (purple roses), grace (pink roses).</image:title>
<image:caption>Healing properties of the rose flower essence: Can help us infuse our heart with joy, enthusiasm for life, and gratitude. Growing tips: Make sure your roses have at least 6 hours of sun and are in well-drained, fertile soil. Fertilize regularly and try not to water over-head or get the leaves wet, as roses are susceptible to diseases like powdery mildew. There is so much to learn about how to grow roses, so I suggest getting a rose book or going to your local rose society for more growing information. Some varieties I'm growing include: Koko Loko, Distant Drums, State of Grace, Iceberg, Silver Lining Floribunda, All Dressed Up Grandiflora, Olivia Rose Austin, and Francis Meilland.</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - The Flower Remedy Newsletter - Issue 3, June 2023 - Studies show that being in nature or even just viewing nature scenes can reduce anger, fear, and stress and increase pleasant feelings. <image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - Growing Flowers & Processing Grief: An Interview with Stephanie G. - 3. How and where do you give the flowers that you grow?</image:title>
<image:caption>I live in a pretty dense area in Baltimore City, it's a colorful neighborhood that's often marked with both the beautiful and the broken. My husband and I set up a 8 x 8 raised garden bed and planted some basil, zinnias, cosmos, anise hyssop, snap dragons, and dahlias! I collected all my old kombucha glasses over the course of a couple months and would give them out to my neighbors who I often see on the stoop. Stoops are historic for hangouts in Baltimore and when the weather is nice, you can find all your neighbors outdoors. My son and I would harvest flowers in the mornings and evenings and then go and knock on a neighbor's door to deliver soon after! It was really sweet to see him light up whenever someone would answer the door!</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - Growing Flowers & Processing Grief: An Interview with Stephanie G. - 5. Is there anything else you’d like to share? Any stories that have stood out to you on your flower journey that you would like to share?</image:title>
<image:caption>I got involved in this initiative as a way to process grief. I wanted to delve into the world of slowness, of waiting with anticipation, of learning to trust the process even if the result seems to have failed and to see beauty in every stage. Gardening wasn't always an easy project but it felt so good to work hard on something that could bear so much fruit. I fell in love with flowers at an early age. My father would bring a rose by my bedtime every now and then just to celebrate the beauty of them! As I grew older I fell in love with how delicate flowers are yet the effects are long lasting. I'm grateful to be able to marvel at each stem and pass that beauty on!</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - The Flowering Conversation Deck is Finally Here! - First of all, if you don’t know what conversation decks are, I’d love to tell you about them! Every conversation deck is comprised of a deck of cards designed to help you connect with friends, family and acquaintances through conversation starters and ice-breaker questions.</image:title>
<image:caption>This deck is really special to me because all of the questions are inspired by flowers and their meanings. I’ve tested it out with friends and family over many months and it’s been a hit every time! Inside are 50 watercolor flowers hand-painted by a talent artist in San Francisco named Tracy (@tracesofwater). On one side of the card you’ll find a flower with its meaning, and on the other is a thought-provoking question based on the meaning of that flower.</image:caption>

Flowers and gardening have such a special place in my heart and I’m so excited to finally share this flower creation with all of you! I hope the cards leave you feeling inspired by flowers and even more connected to the amazing people in your life.</image:title>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - Cultivating Connection Through Growing & Giving Flowers: Interview with Deanna Kitchen - 3. What’s your best tip for new flower gardeners?</image:title>
<image:caption>Growing flowers is one of the most rewarding experiences. Flowers really are simple to grow and there are so, so many varieties available. Because of this, it's tremendously easy to over-purchase and over-plant and end up with a garden that’s far bigger and more demanding than you intended or can keep up with. My best advice is to start small. When you begin with “cut and come again” varieties like cosmos, zinnias and calendula you’ll be able to harvest bloom after bloom from the same plants all summer long. This means that you need far less plants than you think you do to be able to grow A LOT of flowers! Photo (left) by Rylea Foehl</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - Flowers for Mother’s Day & Their Meanings - 1. Lily</image:title>
<image:caption>Lilies have many meanings in different cultures, but in Greek mythology, lilies are a symbol of motherhood as shown in the story of Zeus, Hera, and Hercules.</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - Flowers for Mother’s Day & Their Meanings - 2. Sweat Pea</image:title>
<image:caption>A common meaning of the sweat pea is “gratitude.” Show your mom how grateful you are for her by giving her sweat peas. A bonus is that they smell absolutely incredible!</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - Flowers for Mother’s Day & Their Meanings - 3. Carnation</image:title>
<image:caption>Carnations signal “I love you” and are a perfect addition to a Mother’s Day bouquet. Specifically, pink carnations represent a mother's love. A lot of people say they don’t like carnations, but there are so many beautiful, unique types out there these days. These too smell delicious!</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - Flowers for Mother’s Day & Their Meanings - 4. Rose</image:title>
<image:caption>What says love quite like a rose? Just like carnations, if you’re going to opt for a rose to give your mom for Mother’s Day, you may want to go with a pink rose. Pink roses represent love, appreciation, and gratitude.</image:caption>

<image:title>Flower Remedy Blog - Why I Started the Flower Remedy - When COVID hit in 2020, my anxiety sky-rocketed. All sense of normalcy was gone. I couldn’t stop “doom scrolling” and reading latest news updates, I missed my friends and family, and I needed something else to focus on. I didn’t know it at the time, but the two small garden boxes in my yard would become my new best friends and help me ease the anxiety.</image:title>
